7 Hints for Choosing your Domain Name

1. keep it short

Try to register the shortest name that your customers and visitors will associate with your website. Avoid using letter abbreviations unless your customers use the abbreviations

2. .dot?

There are many extensions available. For businesses in New Zealand, we recommend a .co.nz domain, however if you're targeting the US market for example, you may want to register the .com version

3. avoid trademarked names

We've all heard stories about the people who thought ahead and bought a trademark name, then sold it to the company for a lot of money. Remember, what goes around, comes around. Companies are no longer opening their cheque books, they are calling their lawyers.

4. register your domain name now!

Domain names are being snatched up fast. You must register fast otherwise you may be stuck with a domain name you do not want. You don't even need a website, just secure the name you want before someone else does.

5. one may not be enough

Sometimes it may be ideal to register several similar domain names, eg: www.yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.net, so no one else takes it. You may want your company name and a shorter, easier to remember version. We can set up your hosting so that your domains point to the same website.

6. character types

Domain names are not case sensitive and are restricted to letters, numbers and hyphens/dashes. Spaces and symbols are not allowed.

7. ask around

When you have chosen several domain names, ask friends and clients for their opinions. Is your domain easy to say> Do you have to explain why you chose the name?
